New Delhi: Under the aegis of Prabha Khaitan Foundation noted lyricist Javed Akhtar released author Sanjiv Saraf’s book“Love Longing Loss In Urdu Poetry”. Published by Rekhta books, the book is a flowing narrative and transcreation of 1200 of the best couplets of great Urdu poets into English.

The event saw interaction between Huma Khalil, the Ehsaas Woman of Delhi, author Sanjiv Saraf and Javed Akhtar.

Designed to take Urdu love poetry closer to non-Urdu readers, the book in English has beautiful transcription of couplets of Urdu poets and stalwarts like Meer, Ghalib, Momin, Dagh, Faiz, and several others. The book is a lyrical English transcreation of different stages of emotions that a lover undergoes -longing, interplay, loving, possessiveness, rivalry, separation, breaking-up, and frenzy.

“The challenge was to transcreate yet still retain the authenticity, the fluidity and the soul of the Urdu poetry and which non-native Urdu readers can experience while reading the book. Through ‘Love Longing Loss’, I have tried to take the readers on a guided tour through the forest of love, so as to provide a flavor of the different shades, styles and subtleties of thought, emotion and expression.” says Author, Sanjiv Saraf (Founder – Rekhta Foundation)

According to Ms Anindita Chatterjee – Executive Trustee of Prabha Khaitan Foundation, “We are releasing this book as part of our initiative called “Kitaab”. Under this, we have released books of several noted authors like Vir Sanghvi, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Pavan Varma, and others. This book helps in the spread of our own language- Urdu and its world-famous poetry to non-native Urdu users, thus helping in the promotion of art and culture. After two and half years of pandemic, these launches are bringing joy to our patrons.
