Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files has finally hit the big screens, standing tall as one of the boldest films ever made in Indian cinema. The narrative moves seamlessly between the past and the present, uncovering the harsh truths of Direct Action Day on 16th August 1946. With its release, the film has sparked a massive moment in West Bengal, as crowds gathered outside Rupkotha Cinema to witness its powerful story unfold in theatres across the state.

While The Bengal Files has released in cinemas, the case isn’t the same in West Bengal. The film has not been released in the state due to political pressure on exhibitors. However, people have taken to the streets to protest against the tanashahi and demand the film’s release in theatres across the state. A massive crowd gathered in front of Rupkotha Cinema in West Bengal, holding the Indian flag and posters of the film, demanding its screening.

Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri took to his social media while sharing the glimpses of people standing in front of Rupkotha Cinema in West Bengal. He jotted down the caption - 

"Finally, Bengalis in Bengal are protesting at cinema halls against the unofficial ban of #TheBengalFiles.

While this is an important film about a significant chapter of India’s history, it indeed needs to be seen by everyone in this generation, and this moment speaks about the power of the people and their constitutional rights.

The Bengal Files is written and directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and produced by Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi and Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. The film, presented by Tej Narayan Agarwal & I Am Buddha Productions, is part of Vivek’s Files trilogy, which includes The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files. The film released in theatres on September 5, 2025.
